Fresh Names Coming Up!

The Chat widget today during the Live Chat + Drop didn’t work or had some problems… sorry if you we’re there and couldn’t chat. The live drop feeds were working, however…

In other news, I’ve set the clock back on the GoDrops scanner and now LOTS of names that were lost in the mists of drop time are now coming back up as available. So DO check out the Browse page for new names…

Happy Holidays From GoDrops.com!

I hope everyone is geared up and ready to round out this year with some good times with friends and family. I’m scanning like a Mad Man for tomorrow’s drops out to the 26th. That’s three full days of drops… Brutal! But, someone has to do it! :)

My lists might not be as big, as I’m scanning a three full days worth of names. There are definitely some grabs I’m going to take if they drop even though by this time of the month, I’m usually eating my domains fighting off the bill collectors. Thank god for that GoDaddy auto-renewal for that dot CC name at $19.99 :/

Anywho, HEADS UP on some great drops coming up and stop by the Live Chat + Drop happening everyday at 11am PST!

Success Today!

Today went off without a hitch after migrating the GoDrops data over to the new database (thanks to GoDaddy for providing a backup!). I did some tweeking in the backend to cache database lookups — now there’s a strict delay for each DB query is inforced no matter how many users are chatting away and watching the domain drops. So all is well until migration to the new dedicated server!

I’ve never setup a dedicated server before, so this is all very new to me — not the technology, but the ability to set it all up yourself! I’m going to have nameservers, man! Now the biggest question is: “What domain to I use for my new nameservers?” Then I thought, holy cow, if I have my own nameservers, I can tell others to point their domains to me and I can actually provide services! Anyway, this has got me really thinking outside the shared-hosting box…

Domain Marketplaces

A LOT of registrars already have or are setting up domain marketplaces, some more covertly than others, eNom and Tucows for example. Domain Marketplaces vary in features that may include:

  • sales of expired domains, renewed by the registrar
  • auctions of expiring domains, maybe renewed by the owner
  • auctions of names THEY have caught on the drop and will delete if no sale
  • private backorder auctions
  • user-listed names

You've Just Caught a Name, Now What?

I’ve ended the 1st GoDrops.com Homepage Poll “You’ve Just Caught a Name, Now What?“. The results were decent: the Majority voting to Hold and Market to Endusers and over 1/3 of voters using Minisites with a combination of both Adsense and CPA monetization. Read the rest of this entry »

GoDrops.com Auction and Tomorrow's Sponsor

I’d like to run a few auctions during tomorrow’s Live Chat + Drop. I’ve got a few of my own names in mind and if YOU’VE got any names, you can advertise by commenting here. Tomorrow will feature a tongue-in-cheek sponsor — mainly just for variety, I don’t REALLY have sponsors in the concrete sense. At the end of the week, I’ll give you a run down on the various affiliate marketing resources I use and I’ll have a poll where you can vote the most annoying sponsor of the week :) Read the rest of this entry »

Today's Notable Names

Here are just a few notables had via backorder today. When I figure out the database query to return the names that were backordered by only one one person, I’ll post again — I usually find those interesting… Read the rest of this entry »

Today's Sponsor and The New Member's-Only Feed

Today’s Sponsor of the Live Chat + Drop is Starbucks Coffee. I wish I was drinking some right now, but the economic downturn has emptied the coffee fund leaving nothing but used stir straws and biscotti crumbs. I can barely read the drop list today because someone (you know who you are!) stepped on my glasses. Apparently squashing them just a couple microns in any direction can cause massive headaches — and I feel like I’ve just spent 3 hours on the Spinning Tea Cup Ride at Disneyland. Who's Getting What

Here’s another mini-review on the kinds of names people are backordering with Snapnames and Pool, and what BuyDomains managed to grab. Again, these are only the names that were also on my watch list… Read the rest of this entry »

Taketh Away, then eNom Giveth

eNom was definately a Buzz Kill during today’s drop taking a lot of what would have ended up available for GoDrops.com members, but those names they tasted on the 21st are now being becoming available again. Look for some great names on the home page, the available names feed OR right here… Take THAT T.R.A.F.F.I.C.!, lol…
